What is Historical Documentation?

Historical documents are contemporary, first-hand records of events. Here are some examples of things that may be considered historical documents for enrollment purposes:

  • Census records

  • Court petitions

  • Land records

  • Will and estate records

  • Contemporary newspaper articles

  • Family Bible records

  • Birth, death, and marriage records

  • Contemporary journals or letters

  • Contemporary legal documents

The following do not qualify as historical documentation of Conestoga-Susquehannock ancestry:

  • Family oral traditions or stories

  • Having “Native American features”

  • DNA tests showing some degree of Native American DNA

  • Modern affidavits or testimonies claiming historic Native American heritage (affidavits and legal testimonies must be contemporary with the ancestor in question)
